Prevent the spread of leather damage

If you are working with old leather, including books, and want a consolidant to prevent the spread of damage caused by red rot and age, we heartily recommend Klucel G (Klucel Hydroxypropylcellulose or HPC). It comes in easy to use powder form and when mixed with denatured or isopropyl alcohol, it forms a gel which can then be used to treat leather that is starting to deteriorate or is becoming powdery.

HPC is a versatile, thermoplastic used for many applications, not only leather consolidation. As a powder it can be mixed in either water below 38 degrees or many polar solvents like isopropyl alcohol. Low viscosity Klucel G is perfect for consolidating leather damage and preventing is from spreading further. Whereas a slightly thicker, more viscous liquid will be stronger and can be used as an adhesive.

Mix between 5g - 20g in alcohol depending on the viscosity required and the application. Fortunately, we have pre-prepared and granules so you can choose the product to best suit your project.

After applying Klucel G to leather and allowing it to dry, it is advisable to apply a coat of Renaissance wax.
